Chip Shop Buddy 8A

Chip Shop Buddy is an 8A boulder problem at Stanage in the Peak District, on the gritstone that defines the area's bouldering. Like most hard grit lines it is short but intensely physical, built around small crimps, precise foot placement and heel and toe hooks used to hold body position through an awkward midsection before the holds improve. Its difficulty comes from sustained tension and exact sequencing rather than any single powerful move, and it is the kind of problem climbers return to repeatedly to dial in beta before a send. Stanage's fine-grained gritstone rewards exactly this kind of precision, and problems at 8A there are generally regarded as stiff for the grade compared with softer sandstone or granite equivalents elsewhere.

History

Ben Bransby made the first ascent in 2005 after working the problem over multiple sessions. It saw little traffic afterward until Hamish McArthur flashed it on October 17, 2021, an ascent supported by Lattice Training and notable because a flash is a far harder standard on a problem this bouldery and technical than on a route that rewards raw power. Records show only two documented ascents of the problem, which is typical for hard Stanage grit lines that see plenty of attempts but few clean sends.

WIFE ON HOLD - Gritstone Bouldering (2026) is a roughly 25-minute film shot across the Peak District, Northumberland and northern Yorkshire, following Sam Carling, Leo Skinner, Solly Kemball-Dorey and Finn Parry. Chip Shop Buddy appears as one of the harder grit problems the group works through during the edit, used to show the technical, crimp-and-hook style of climbing that separates Peak District grit from other bouldering areas covered in the film.
