Third Millennium 5.13d

Third Millennium is a sport route on the northwest wall of Magical Mystery Tower at the Monastery, a Front Range crag in Big Thompson Canyon near Estes Park, Colorado. It climbs 80 feet over 10 bolts to two bolt anchors, graded 5.13d (8b, E8 7a), between the routes The Quickening and Grand Ol' Opry on the same wall. The climbing opens with some of the hardest single moves on the route, crimps and tight pockets right off the ground, before a redpoint crux above the fourth bolt where the climber has to tick-tack through demanding gastons on poor footholds, with an easier variation trending right for those who want to avoid that sequence. Above the fifth bolt there is relative relief before a final compression problem guards the anchor chains.

History

Tommy Caldwell made the first ascent in 1996. It has held up as one of the Front Range's respected test pieces at its grade, described on Mountain Project as one of the area's proudest lines and among the best of its grade in the country, known for its sustained, technical movement on a compact wall alongside other hard routes at the Monastery. The film frames the climb as an unsponsored, no-frills send, focused on Hazelnutt working and eventually redpointing the line that Caldwell first climbed nearly three decades earlier.
