Zoo York 8A

Zoo York is an 8A boulder problem at the Blockbuster boulder in Caley, a gritstone bouldering area in West Yorkshire rather than the Peak District. It is climbed as a sit-down start, both hands on a low undercut, moving up onto and then finishing out a prominent prow or arete feature. The line is short but sustained through its crux, demanding heel and toe hook control and precise body tension to hold the arete rather than relying on any single powerful pull, and it's rated among the harder problems at the crag, with the kind of rounded, friction-dependent grit holds that punish anything less than careful footwork.

History

Christian Durkin made the first ascent in 2000. The problem has since become one of the benchmark 8A boulders on Yorkshire grit, appearing on regional tick lists of the area's hardest problems alongside other well known Caley testpieces, and repeat ascensionists have generally described it as climbing at the top end of its grade rather than a soft touch. Its combination of a technical undercut start and a committing arete finish has kept it a target for climbers working through the area's hardest lines.

WIFE ON HOLD - Gritstone Bouldering, Leo Skinner's roughly 25 minute film shot in 2026 across the Peak District, Northumberland and northern Yorkshire, includes Zoo York among the problems climbed by Sam Carling, Leo Skinner, Solly Kemball-Dorey and Finn Parry. It presents the boulder as one stop within the group's wider tour of gritstone venues, set alongside other lines like West Side Story rather than treated as a standalone objective in its own right.
