Climbing Films for People Who Don't Climb

A prodigy who has never had to try hard learns how to fail. Alex Megos is the subject, but the film is about patience, and Patagonia cuts his story with the history of the redpoint itself. It shows a Spanish route refusing to go and the quiet conversations about what one ascent is worth. Watch it if the friend liked the people in Stone Locals and wants one person's story. It follows because it is the same kind of film narrowed to a single life.

Two Brits build a horizontal crack in a cellar and spend two years in it, then cross the Atlantic for Century Crack, a 5.14b roof in Utah. The funniest film on this site, and the setup explains itself. It shows training in a basement, self-deprecating comedy, and offwidth climbing as a kind of horror. Watch it if the first two films felt serious; this one is not, until the desert.

Renan Ozturk on Everest as cameraman for the search for Sandy Irvine's body, and the 1924 mystery of whether he and Mallory reached the top. It shows the crowds on the Northeast Ridge, the economics of guiding, and a summit push filmed while barely able to breathe. Watch it if the friend knows Everest from the news and wants the version with doubt in it. After Wide Boyz it is the first mountain on the list, and the mystery carries it for anyone.

A six-week Greenland expedition with a glaciologist, a first ascent, and Alex Honnold as the guide most people already know, in ninety-four minutes. It shows an ice cap traverse, fieldwork on melting glaciers, and a 4,000-foot sea wall climbed for the first time by Honnold and Hazel Findlay. Watch it if the friend liked Free Solo and wants Honnold doing something other than soloing. It follows Everest as the second expedition, and the one where the science matters as much as the climb.

Nina Caprez and Jeremy Bernard become parents at the height of their careers and ask what actually drives a person. The climbing is in Morocco; the film is about the question, and about a heart diagnosis and an earthquake that turn the trip into something else. Watch it if the friend wants a film about care rather than risk. After two expeditions it is the first film here where the climbing is almost beside the point.

Jeff Lowe's life told through one route on the Eiger, his nine-day solo of Metanoia in 1991, with Conrad Anker and Catherine Destivelle among the voices. A biography first, and the second half is about losing physical ability rather than gaining it. Watch it if the friend likes documentaries about a whole life. It follows Andrea as the second film about what a climber becomes when climbing stops being the center.

Four Belgian climbers, a captain in his seventies, a ten-meter sailboat and unclimbed walls in Greenland. Also a film about music and being stuck together, because the crew plays instruments every time the weather turns. Watch it if the friend wants something funny and strange after two serious biographies. The climbing here is real but the boat is the story, and nobody needs a grade to follow it.

Janja Garnbret's own film about the pressure of being the best competition climber in the world, Olympic champion and serial World Cup winner. The wall is plastic; the story is not, and she is candid about expectation while still competing. Watch it if the friend watched the Olympics and wondered what the athletes were feeling. After the boat it is the most contemporary film on the list, and the only one indoors.

A documentary-length portrait of Dean Potter, the risks he invented, and the people around him, in sixty minutes from HBO Max. It shows free soloing, highlining and BASE in Yosemite, and then the relationships those choices strained, without a verdict. Watch it if the friend wants the hard version of what this sport can cost. It follows Garnbret's film as the counterweight: one film about pressure survived, one about risk that was not.

Six minutes, one wall, no rope, no narration. The film that made Alex Honnold's name outside climbing, shot by Renan Ozturk in Mexico in January 2014 on 1,500 feet of limestone. Watch it if the friend has six minutes and wants to see the thing itself. It is the first of two short films that close the list, placed here because after an hour on Potter it needs no words.

If they ask what the hardest climb in the world looks like: this, and the years of training behind eighteen minutes. It shows Adam Ondra's 9c at Flatanger broken into its sections, including the upside-down kneebar rest he trained for on a gym floor, and the scream at the chains. Watch it last, once the friend knows what a grade is for. Sendero was the beautiful one; this is the hard one, and together they are the whole range of the sport.
