Best Of The West

Michael Call's bouldering film follows Chris Sharma back to Hueco Tanks in early 2005, seven years after his last visit, alongside a deep cast of the era: Boone Speed, Steve Maisch, GP Salvo, Jason Kehl, Mike Beck and Tim Kemple. It is the first of two films from largely the same crew, with the companion piece, Big Game, shot at Castle Hill and Flock Hill in New Zealand. This is mid-2000s bouldering filmmaking at its most unfussy: hard problems, a crew that clearly likes each other, and a Fugazi track on the soundtrack doing a lot of work. Worth it for the Hueco footage and for seeing Sharma drop back into a place that made him, several careers into the sport.
