First Free Climb of Underground Big Wall in Macocha
2023 · 34 min · Sport Climbing, Big Wall
Macocha is a 138 metre abyss in the Moravian Karst, an hour from Ondra's home town, and at the bottom of it sits a massive arch that had never been free climbed. Access is limited to a five day window each December, by permission only, and the line Ondra goes after is Příklepový strop, five pitches of 8b+, 8b+, 8a+, 7a and 6c strung together on rusty pegs and old bolts. What makes this one worth watching is the setting rather than the number. Cold, humid, wildly overhanging rock underground, poor protection, and almost no days available to try it. Ondra calls it one of his all time favourite climbing experiences, and the film gives room to the Czech climbers who found and worked the line before him. English subtitles are available in the video settings.
