Lexicon E11 7a

Lexicon is a trad route on Pavey Ark in the Lake District, England, given E11 7a, among the hardest traditionally protected climbs in Britain. It follows an independent start, crosses the existing E8 line Impact Day, then launches into a technical, bold headwall. The moves are roughly 8b+ sport-climbing difficulty, but protected only by small gear on the final section, where a fall from the crux would be a long one, reported at up to 25 to 30 meters, close enough to the ground to be genuinely dangerous.

History

Neil Gresham made the first ascent of Lexicon in September 2021, his first route at the E11 grade. The route was repeated by Steve McClure, then Dave MacLeod made the third ascent, followed by Mathew Wright. James Pearson attempted to flash it in June 2022 but did not succeed. In May 2025, Adam Ondra made the sixth ascent of Lexicon and, doing so with no prior inspection, produced the first-ever flash of an E11 trad route and the hardest trad flash on record. Ondra prepared by watching available footage and rappelling the line facing away from the rock to avoid seeing the holds before his attempt.

The film covers his preparation, the psychological demands of committing to unrehearsed climbing above marginal gear on Lexicon's headwall, and the successful flash that made him the sixth person to climb the route and the first to do so without falling or prior beta.
