The Rostrum is a long, steep route in Yosemite noted for its overhanging character and finishing sequence through the feature known as the Alien Roof. Graded around 5.12, it presents sustained, pumpy climbing on steep granite. Dean Potter's ascent is historically notable for being performed free-solo while wearing a BASE-jumping parachute—an approach he termed "FreeBASE"—which combined extreme solo movement with an atypical last-resort safety device. The climb itself tests sustained strength, route-reading on overhangs, and the psychological demands of exposed solo climbing.
