Mallorca

Mallorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, is home to high sea cliffs and natural arches that have become synonymous with deep‑water soloing (psicobloc). Climbers are drawn to its exposure above the Mediterranean where long overhangs and blank sections force bold movement with water as the only fall zone; the island’s coastline has produced routes that test dynamic movement, route‑finding over protruding rock, and the psychological demands of very long falls.

Two films here trace that strand of Mallorca climbing through Chris Sharma’s work. Es Pontàs: The First Ascent documents Sharma’s landmark free soloing of a natural sea arch and concentrates on the repeated dyno attempts and the swim‑back recovery that define psicobloc attempts in the area. Black Pearl returns years later to Mallorca’s sea cliffs and presents footage of Sharma on a newer, even more sustained line over water; the short contrasts physical intensity with the environmental conditions of the Mediterranean coastline.

Viewed together, these pieces illuminate the specific demands of deep‑water soloing: sequence endurance in overhanging terrain, the calculus of committing to airborne moves with no rope, and how experience, training and local conditions combine to make — and sometimes remake — what is possible above the sea.
