Armed Response 8a+ / V12

Armed Response is a boulder problem in the Fortress sector of Rocklands, South Africa's sandstone bouldering area in the Cederberg Mountains. Graded 8a+ (V12), it starts seated on a large sidepull, moves to a gaston, and climbs straight up through a short, powerful sequence with little room for error on the crux moves. It is listed as a classic of its grade in the area's guidebooks and draws visiting climbers working through Rocklands' harder problems each season, alongside better-known neighbors such as Golden Shadow and King of Limbs.

History

Available sources credit Baptiste Ometz with the problem, though a confirmed first ascent date was not found. It is graded 8a+/V12 in current guidebook listings and treated as one of the Fortress sector's classic testpieces, the kind of line strong boulderers seek out on a Rocklands trip as they work up toward the area's hardest problems. Multiple climbers have filmed ascents of it over the years, and it regularly appears in bouldering edits shot at Rocklands, reflecting its reputation as a short, powerful line worth stopping for even on a trip built around bigger projects.
